Course Title: Honors Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus
2 Semesters – 10 Credits – 5 Class Periods per Week
Course Description:
Both Standard and Honors Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus encompass and extend topics and concepts of intermediate algebra. The goals of the classes are to develop proficiency with mathematical skills, to expand understanding of mathematical concepts, and to improve logical thinking.
Course Objectives:
-
Students will understand how relationships and concepts in mathematics demonstrate the wonders of God’s creation.
-
Students will understand how mathematics reveals the invisible attributes of God.
-
Students will understand how mathematics aids mankind in fulfilling our purpose of honoring God and serving each other.
-
Students will demonstrate a competence in intermediate algebraic skills through review of linear relations and functions as well as theory of equations.
-
Students will demonstrate a competence in the use of vectors.
-
Students will become familiar with and develop a competence in a variety of trigonometric topics such as the unit circle, trigonometric functions and identities, and the application of trigonometry.
-
Students will develop a competence in the use of exponential and logarithmic functions.
-
Students will become competent in the computation of probability and statistical values.
-
Students will demonstrate competence with Proof by Induction and determination of convergence/divergence of a general series using the Ratio Test.
-
Students will become familiar with basic calculus functions such as limits, derivatives, and integrals.
-
Students will demonstrate solving max/min, area/perimeter, and cost word problems using the derivative.
-
Students will demonstrate the use of multiple derivatives as a graphing tool to determine max/min points and Points of Inflection.
The primary difference (though not the sole one) between Standard Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus and Honors Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus is the time devoted to Calculus topics (and, related to that, the depth at which they are covered): one complete quarter of work is devoted to Limits, Derivatives, and Integrals. In turn, this puts additional time constraints on the students during the rest of the year to complete the course work in the remaining three quarters. In addition, Honors Trig/Pre-Cal has a second semester final covering subject matter introduced through the entire year.
