Course Title:  AP Statistics 
2 Semesters – 10 Credits – 5 Class periods per week
 

Course Description:
Statistics is designed to be a college-level first semester course which will prepare the student for the Advanced Placement Statistics test.  It is designed to fulfill the requirements of the Advanced Placement Course Description Statistics as presented by The College Board.
 

Course Objectives:
                The course will include the following topics:
                Biblical Core:
  • Using relationships and concepts in mathematics to describe the wonders of God’s creation and  reveal the invisible attributes of God
  • Learning how mathematics can be used to help us honor God and serve others
  • Exploring Data:  Observing patterns and departures from patterns
Interpreting graphical distributions of univariate data
Summarizing distributions of univariate data
Comparing distributions of univariate data
Exploring bivariate data
Exploring categorical data:  frequency tables
  • Planning a Study:  Deciding what and how to measure
Overview of methods of data collection
Planning and conducting surveys
Planning and conducting experiments
  • Anticipating Patterns:  Producing models using probability and simmulation
Probability as relative frequency
Combining independent random variables
The normal distribution
Simulating sampling distribution
  • Statistical Inference:  Confirming models
Confidence intervals
Tests of significance
Special case (t-distribution) of normally distributed data
 
Textbook:
Peck, Olsen and Devore, Introduction to Statistical and Data Analysis, published by Duxbury Thomson Learning, 2001.  Supplemental material will be added by the instructor as deemed appropriate.
 
Required Materials:
 Bible, textbook, Texas Instruments TI-83 graphing calculator
 
Prerequisites:
Satisfactory completion of the Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus course and/or teacher recommendation
